Why Work For Us Deena's Response
Working for Autism West Midlands Deena

We aim to provide a person centered approach within the residential home. We also have an extension where 3 individuals live a little more independently. New staff should always ask questions if unsure. Also, it is important for them to read care plans and behavior management files to gain more in depth knowledge about the residence. They can watch and learn from experienced staff who know individual people and how to respond to their needs. I would also advise new staff to expect the unexpected and don’t be afraid to make a fool of yourself!

I work to the best of my ability and knowledge to support people with autism. I offer support, choice and understanding to help them feel empowered.

A typical day here starts with handover. After this, medication trays are checked followed by planning the structure of the shift where I allocate duties to staff members. Supervision meal times are also arranged and any planned activities are taken into account. Once mealtime is over, the medication procedure is followed for those needing medication. Individuals will then relax in their room or communal area in the home, if they are not going out. Staff then support evening care plans and medication is given to those who again may need them. Handover to night staff is at 22:00.

I think that all staff have a very positive impact on individuals. Communication between parents, professionals and staff is key to provide the best support. I would like to think that staff help enhance the lives of service users in many aspects.

I feel very well supported by the management team at this residential home and feel confident that any concerns I had would be listened to. My team members are approachable and supportive. We are all open to new ideas brought forward. Being a part of a team is an essential part of our job. We have a friendly and open approach to all new staff.
