A Gift of Independence for Christmas!

11th October 2017

This Christmas autism west midlands are raising funds in order to equip an Independent Living Skills Kitchen in one of our residential homes for people with autism and complex needs.

The aim of this independent skills kitchen is to provide an opportunity for the people who live at the home to learn daily living skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Many people we support require supervision and support in order to keep them safe and be able to access daily life opportunities. It is our aim to support people to live as independently as possible.

The daily living skills kitchen is separate to the living accommodation but located within the same site. The kitchen will provide a separate quite space away from the home that allows people to have dedicated 1:1 time or small group work with experienced support staff to develop and practice new skills.

The Independent Living Skills Kitchen will enable those we support to access a specially adapted and equipped kitchen where they can develop skills such as cooking, food preparation, meal planning, healthy eating and other domestic skills.  The space will be designed to include easily accessible and safe equipment that encourages greater choice and control for those we support. Working towards greater independence and being less reliant on support staff for daily living tasks will increase confidence, self-worth and self-esteem providing an opportunity for people to thrive in their own homes.
