► The Poplars

The Poplars was opened in 2001 as a joint venture between Autism West Midlands and Birnbeck Housing Association. It is a residential service providing 24-hour care and support to five adults, both male and female, with autistic spectrum condition, challenging behaviour and associated disabilities.

Four service users live in the main part of the home and one in a self-contained annex. The home provides both residential and day services for the service users, creating an environment that promotes their rights as individuals and supports independent living.

We are located in a residential area near to the University of Birmingham and on the outskirts of the city centre. This gives us a wealth of facilities and community activities from which to choose and provide for service users.

The home consists of a living room, dining room, breakfast kitchen, bathroom, shower room, two separate toilets, laundry room, and very large front and rear gardens. There are four bedrooms in the main house for service users. The annexed consists of one bedroom, living/dining room, bathroom/toilet and kitchen with laundry facilities.

The Registered Care Manager is responsible for the smooth running of the home, taking the lead in creating an appropriate home and work environment for all service users and staff. Each individual is provided with the support necessary to achieve their maximum potential, taking into account the Triad of Impairments.

Day services

Day services at The Poplars are designed to meet the individual needs of service users. Local facilities are used whenever possible, so as to promote integration into the local community, and service users are given a choice of both in-house and community based activities; they are fully supported in their chosen activities. Suitability of programme design is monitored via supervision, team meetings, Individual Person Centred Planning meetings, service users’ consultation and direct observation. Also used are college reports and 24-hour diaries.

Some of the facilities accessed in the service users programmes are local colleges, The MAC, drop-in centres, nature centres, leisure centres, surrounding urban centres and art galleries. Educational courses include Gardening, Literacy, Performing Arts, Computer Studies, Living Skills, Social Interaction, Health & Safety and Keep-Fit. College placements are subject to change at the beginning of each academic year. Service users have also been supported in seeking voluntary work placements, further illustrating our commitment to community integration.
